What is OpenCV?
OpenCV is a renowned Open Source Computer Vision and machine learning software library. It was developed with the perspective of delivering an interconnected infrastructure for applications in computer vision and speeding up the use of machine perception in consumer products. It provides comprehensive tools and algorithms to process and analyze images and videos. To be more specific, its recent spike in usage can be seen via object detection, video capturing, image processing, real-time face recognition, and tracking moving objects.
OpenCV was first created by Intel in 1999 and later developed collaboratively with help from Willow Garage, Itseez, and is currently supported by OpenCV.org. Although OpenCV is written in C++, it also offers interfaces and bindings for a number of other programming languages, such as Python, Java, and MATLAB. The widely used “cv2” Python interface offers an easy way to integrate OpenCV functionalities into Python-based projects.

What is Computer Vision? 
The ability for computers to perceive the world as we do is known as computer vision. It is a field of AI that enables computers to understand and interpret images and videos. It is built upon different algorithms and techniques to facilitate the meaningful extraction of visual information.
Computer vision is a domain in which computers try to replicate the human optical approach. As emphasized before, computer vision is a branch of AI. The process of computer vision includes image acquisition, pre-processing, feature extraction, object detection and recognition, and scene understanding. This entire process, in other words, leads to the operation of computer vision.

The information gathered by computer vision is later converted into computer language, making it simple for the machine to understand and perceive, which makes it easier to gather multi-dimensional information. The main purpose of computer vision is for machines to learn the process of capturing information through pixels.

Without any further ado, let’s begin with the OpenCV tutorial:

  1. Setting up OpenCV with Python:
    A. Installing OpenCV and required dependencies:

    There are a few different ways through which you can install OpenCV and here is one of them:
    You can install OpenCV on Windows using pip. Installing OpenCV in Python involves a few steps, including the installation of required dependencies. Here is a quick start guide to assist you:
  1. Install Python:

   – Go to https://www.python.org/, the official website for Python, and download the most recent version of the language for your operating system.

   – Follow the directions that the Python installer gives you.

  • Install pip:

   – Pip is a package manager for Python that makes it simple to install outside libraries. It usually comes bundled with Python installations.

  •  Install OpenCV dependencies:

   – Before installing OpenCV, a number of dependencies must be installed. The most frequent dependencies are Matplotlib (for visualizations) and NumPy (for numerical operations). Use the following pip commands to install them:

  • Install OpenCV:

   – OpenCV can be installed using pip. Run the following command:

     This command installs the precompiled OpenCV binaries for Python.

            B. Verifying and importing OpenCV in Python :

When a photo on your computer is loading at the same time, the computer is creating a path for it to open, and as the computer reads the image, it creates a memory of the same. Once the image is loaded, it is displayed on your screen.

One can access these channels individually to see how much red, green, and blue are present.

  2. Sharpen Filter: With the help of a sharpen filter, we can sharpen the edges and details and make them appear more defined.
  3. Edge Detection Filter: It makes highlights and makes the edges in an image even more stipulated.

B. Histogram Equalization for Image Enhancement:
Histogram Equalization for Image Enhancements is especially used in fixing uneven lighting or low-contrast images. It overall changes the appearance of the image. It redistributes the pixel intensities across the entire range, enhancing both dark and bright areas.

C. Denoising Techniques (Gaussian, Median Filter):
Images captured in the real world often contain a lot of noise, which affects the quality of the image and further leads to degradation of the image. The denoising technique aims to reduce the noise in the image, and it uses the following two techniques:

  1. Gaussian Filter: This filter helps to smooth the image by averaging the pixel values in a neighborhood, effectively reducing random noise.
  2. Median Filter: Replaces each pixel with the median value of its neighboring pixels. It is effective in removing salt-and-pepper-type noise.

      1. Affine Transformations: Affine transformations are responsible for preserving parallel lines and ratios of distances. Affine transformations take care of rotating, scaling, and shearing the image. These transformations are used to change the orientation, position, and size of an object in an image.

      2. Perspective Transformations: Perspective Transformation acts in changing the viewpoint of the image. It involves adjusting the angle through which the image is seen or correcting or stimulating the visual perspective of the image.

C. Image warping and homography:

  1. Image warping: Image warping refers to the digital manipulation of the pixels of an image. Through image warping one can deform the image in order to get the desired shape. And hence, one can distort or transform an image.
  2. Homography: Homography is a transformation that relates corresponding points in two different images or two different perspectives of the same image. For homography to work, both images must be in the same plane for enabling mapping of the points, allowing geometric alignment and registration.
